Cleaver’s Organic meat is now available in recyclable, paper-based trays, cutting plastic use by 75 per cent compared with standard plastic tray-and-label packs.
This is Hewitt’s latest step to reduce its environmental footprint across the supply chain.
The new trays are made from recyclable and sustainably sourced materials.
Where soft plastic recycling is available, the plastic film used to keep meat fresh and hygienic on some packs can also be recycled, preventing unnecessary waste and reducing landfill.
Hewitt Foods general manager Patrick Kerr said Hewitt was proud to take a stance on increasing packaging sustainability in Australia.
“This is just one of our company-wide initiatives to continually reduce our environmental footprint and reinforce our commitment to true sustainability,” Mr Kerr said.
“We hope to encourage more businesses to move towards environmentally friendly packaging solutions so that it becomes a standard approach right across the supermarket.”
Across the volume Cleaver’s moves through Coles supermarket shelves each week, cutting plastic by three-quarters creates a meaningful reduction in packaging waste.
The new trays are already rolling out now, on the same certified organic, free range Cleaver’s range Australians know and trust.
The packaging update sits alongside Cleaver’s existing standards, certified organic, free range, and raised to high animal welfare standards.
